GREEN RIVERSIDE GARDEN WITH A JETTY

The garden backs onto a branch of the river Waal in Heerjansdam. The clients wanted to increase the sense of depth in their garden with a grassy transition from the main terrace next to the house to a large jetty on the water. This was achieved by laying a concrete slab path with wide strips of grass between the slabs. Besides creating the green effect desired by the clients, this also increases absorption of rainwater.

The planting scheme combines ornamental grasses with evergreen ferns (Polystichum) and low-growing evergreen shrubs (Leucothoe Zeblid) that continue to provide colour in the garden in the winter months. The two existing trees were retained in the new design because of their distinctive shape, flowers and leaves. After a dip in the river, the large sunbeds on the jetty make it the perfect place for the family to enjoy the sun.
