INFORMATIVE ROOF TERRACE AND EVENT LOCATION

Design for the first ‘green roof’ of Rotterdam.

The design had to take into account the function of ‘Green Info Roof’ of the city of Rotterdam, but also the wishes of the hospitality client to use the roof terrace for events such as drinks, dinners, lunches and parties.

The city of Rotterdam wanted to create a place where residents and interested citizens could receive advice about ‘green roofs’.

The city of Rotterdam supports the green covering of flat roofs. In this way the city will be greener and the plants will collect rainwater, sparing the municipal sewage system.

Green roofs also collect particulate matter, offer coolness in summer and retain the heat longer in winter. The use of sustainable materials and creating biodiversity were taken into account in the design. Hence a place was created in the city centre where birds and insects like to stay, but also where people can enjoy the green setting.

Various types of sedum and grass applications, fragrant citrus plants, herbs, vegetables, pear trees and edible flowers in mobile borders were used in the design for the ‘green roof’ on the monumental Groothandelsgebouw. Garden herbs, lettuce varieties and berry plants were planted in the mobile border sections.
